HBA Kansas City Hosts Successful Event Exploring the Evolving Nature of Work

On Wednesday, 14 August 2019, HBA Kansas City and BioKansas co-hosted a professional development event titled “From Ladders to Lattices: Thriving in the Evolving World of Healthcare Leadership.”

The event featured keynote speaker Carol Wells, HBA STAR 2015 and senior director of commercial, medical and government affairs training & development at Genentech. Carol addressed new ways for healthcare and life science companies to keep pace with today's rapid rate of change and skills needed to succeed in the healthcare business.

Key takeaways from Carol’s presentation included:

  • Adapting to change isn’t optional. Some economists theorize that by the time our children enter the workforce, 65% of the jobs they take on don’t currently exist.
  • In the future, we’re going to rely on capabilities instead of competences. Having a capability means you know how to apply your experience and are transferable across a lot of different industries.
  • Future ways of working will transform from static jobs (ladders) to a more fluid, capability-driven way (lattices) of contributing to meaningful work. It’s a total mindset shift.
  • Good leaders require good judgement. As Carol’s mentor once said, “Good judgment is the result of experience and experience is the result of bad judgement.” When you reflect on what you learn and what didn’t go so well, you develop experience.

Carol concluded by encouraging everyone to create a career development plan following the 70/20/10 philosophy: 70% experience (on-the-job projects, job changes, job shadowing, stretch assignment), 20% exposure (feedback and coaching, mentoring, networking) and 10% education (workshops, seminars, self-directed learning).

The event concluded with a panel discussion featuring distinguished local healthcare leaders:

  • Laurie Myers, Ph.D., Cingulate Therapeutics
  • Phouvieng Saycocie, Viracor Eurofins Clinical Diagnostics
  • Erin Strait, Ph.D., Merck Animal Health
